Factors Influencing Aggregation and Adhesion of Oral Lactobacillus gasseri

Lactobacillus gasseri is one of the species, which has been considered as an oral probiotic. The probiotic characters, e.g., aggregation and adhesion abilities, may be affected by changes in environment. This study aimed to investigate effect cell surface components, some enzymes, pH, sugars, ions on (auto- coaggregation) abilities L. ability adhere epithelial cells. control group contained bacteria pH 7.0 solution. results indicated that surface-related protein components were essential for internalized adhering gasseri. For environmental factors, amylase, calcium ion, magnesium ion significantly increased both autoaggregation coaggregation ability, while these decreased lactose. between S. mutans ATCC 25175TM was 4.0, whereas glucose, sucrose, trypsin, lysozyme coaggregation. 8.0, enzymes sugars did not affect this ability. These traits could used preliminary screening potential candidates probiotics with possible anti-caries properties.
